Keep, Sell, Toss? 5 Things That Should Go in the Donate Pile

I am the Resale Queen and have sold on almost every platform including Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, Poshmark, Etsy and eBay. I sold almost anything from phonebooks to scuba gear and everything in between. When downsizing, it is difficult to decide what to sell and what to donate. Here are 5 items that should probably go into the donate pile.

1)    Clothes

While some very good condition, high end labels do resell well, the average mall brand clothing does not have a huge market. Clothing is also the #1 most donated item to thrift stores and readily available in thrift and consignment stores.

2)    Houseware Items

Things like dishes, mugs and glasses are the second most commonly donated items and don’t have a huge demand on the resale market.

3)    CDs/ DVDs

With many people now turning to subscription and streaming services, many people are clearing out their collections. Likewise, the demand for these items has also decreased making them very difficult to sell.

4)    Furniture

While second hand furniture does sell, it is often a fraction of the retail price. In addition, it is often difficult for buyers to transport the furniture if they don’t have a truck or van. This makes the pool of buyers a lot smaller unless you’re willing to deliver the items.

5)    Books

I have volunteered at numerous thrift stores over the years and the one thing they were all overrun with was books. Since there are so many copies readily available second hand, there isn’t much of a resale market for them.
